All 2nd through 5th grade teachers are responsible for teaching and evaluating based on the Common Curriculum for languages, art and mathematics, as well as science, social science and technology integration. Additionally, all elementary school students have weekly classes in Music, Art, Religion, Ethics and Values and Physical Education with specialist teachers. They also receive social and Spanish classes 5 times a week. Our curriculum is based on standards and rubrics and units for each subject and grade. We review annually in order to ensure an approach that is meaningful and consistent and has a good sequence of skills, concepts, knowledge and attitudes that are systematically taught and evaluated. Curriculum maps, developed by teachers in each grade, identify topics and units taught, and teacher teams continually refine unit plans. Teachers use the “backward” design model.
